Community Hubs consultation dates

$

0

Following Wolverhampton City Council’s controversial plans to merge Libraries, Community Centres and Youth Centres into ‘Community Hubs’ across the city over the next 5 years, a number of public consultation events have been scheduled to allow residents to find out more about the plans.

As ever, WV11.co.uk remains neutral on such issues, however we would like to encourage residents in Wednesfield to attend these meetings and find out the facts about proposals.

Unfortunately there have been a lot of unfounded rumours flying around and Express & Star headlines such as “Wolverhampton Libraries Facing Closure” do not help matters. Non of the Libraries, Community Centres or Youth Centres in Wednesfield are facing closure under the new proposals.

Wednesfield & Long Knowle will remain largely unaffected with new joined entrances being proposed.

In Ashmore Park the proposals are to relocate the Library and Community Centre to the current Youth Centre site. This would see extensive work to make the site fit for purpose as a Community Hub.

WV11.co.uk have taken part in meetings with the a group of local people working together under the banner of the ‘Ashmore Park Community Hubs Advisory Group’. This group recently met with Cllr Elias Mattu and council officers to discuss the proposed changes in Ashmore Park and to address resident’s questions and concerns. We will be writing a follow up article in a few days with the feedback we were given at this meeting.

A volunteer-run Community Centre home to numerous community groups is the latest place to fall victim to a spate of burglaries in Ashmore Park.

Thieves broke into Ashmore Park Community Centre on Griffiths Drive yesterday (Thurs 29th Nov) between 4pm and 7pm, ransacking the office which is staffed by volunteers and stole a computer, whilst damaging doors, desks and filling cabinets.

This is the 12th burglary reported in the area in 3 weeks and Police have stepped up local patrols in an effort to catch those responsible.

Residents are being urged to be vigilant and make sure that their homes are secure. (Click here to see our Burglary Advice article).

Police are asking for witnesses or anyone with information to call them on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Two Arrested in Burglary Investigation

Update from Sgt Simon Causer:

Wednesfield Burglaries

Traditionally this time of year can see a spike in burglary offences being committed, a combination of the darker nights and the fact that people are stocking up early on Christmas presents is too much of a temptation to a burglar.

Between 1st October and 30th November this year we have seen 58 burglaries in the Wednesfield Area, 35 were burglaries of peoples homes. The same period last year saw 51 offences of which 21 were of peoples homes. These are spread across Ashmore Park, Wednesfield, Wood End, March End, Castlebridge, Linthouse areas.

At this very moment two adult males are being interviewed by Local Detectives regarding burglary offences.

Crime Prevention

We urge residents to take some simple crime prevention steps which could stop them being a victim. Simple steps such as making sure doors and windows are closed and locked, even when you are at home. This includes doors at the rear of homes. All too often burglars will try this means of entry first as it is less obvious to passers by. Leaving a light on when you go out. Ensuring that there are no tools left in your gardens overnight which the opportunist burglar can use to enter your home.

Advent Calendar

While burglary across the force is reducing, it continues to be a priority for us, especially in the run up to Christmas. We recognise the long-term impact that burglary has on victims and their invasion of privacy so we work hard reduce burglary and bring offenders to justice.

The force is launching an advent calendar tomorrow. Read the press release which contains details here. http://www.west-midlands.police.uk/latest-news/press-release.asp?ID=4125

Essentially it will contain crime prevention advice and info in the run up to Christmas. The link below is to the advent calendar and will be live from tomorrow. (1st Dec 2012)

http://www.west-midlands.police.uk/misc/advent/

As an LPU Wolverhampton has introduced Operation Arrow as a method to target burglaries across the City. This involves a number of activities involving Uniform and Plain Clothes Officers from a variety of teams including Response Teams, CID, Neighbourhood Teams and our Offender management team. This is addition to the regular patrols by both your Neighbourhood Officers and the Local Neighbourhood Wardens. Officers and Wardens across Wolverhampton are involved in leaflet drops to residents offering crime prevention advice. The Local Neighbourhood Partnership is actively visiting victims to offer further security advice and simple effective alarms to prevent them becoming a repeat victim. Being the victim of a burglary once is once too many times.

We urge the Community to contact us if they see anything suspicious. If anyone has any information as to who is responsible for these crimes please contact your local Neighbourhood Team, the CID at Bilston Street or Crimestoppers. Any information you have could help us to reduce further the offences being committed.

Festive Church services in and around Wednesfield

St Thomas’s Christmas Concert & 40 Years of Music Making for Ashmore Park Choir

Last night saw the annual Christmas Concert at St. Thomas’s church. Once more Ashmore Park Choir were performing in this, their 40th year. There was a full concert with many soloists and to break up the singing there was a reading, an ode and a monologue.

Terry Green as Musical Director was on top form as always, along with his assistant conductor Mr John Billau. Ros Green was the accompanist and Gillian Edwards the organist at St. Thomas’s played magnificently as always. Many carols were sung including favourites which we could all join in and sing together; Once in Royal David’s City, Hark the Herald Angels Sing and my particular favourite, O Come All Ye Faithful to name but a few.

There were solo performances by Rita Williams, Sue Ridgway, Steve Robotham,, Sandra Lloyd, and a new carol I hadn’t heard before performed by Jill Hatton called The Monkey’s Carol  The non singing entertainment was Geraldine Blanchette doing a Gervais Phinn reading about Our Wayne in a manger, and an Ode about pensioners shopping at B&Q  by Clive William and finally a Christmas Monologue by The Bard of Wednesfield, Irene Dodd, was the last but not least non singing contribution.

At half time there were drinks and mincepies which were put on by the ladies and Gentlemen of the Church.

It was a wonderful night and over a Thousand pounds was raised for Christian Aid. Sales of the Jubilee Concert  CD and the lovely Calendar were also good.  The Choir also made a donation from their CD sales to Compton Hospice.

This is always the start of Christmas for me and once again Terry Green and his Performers did a wonderful job as always .

Plans progressing for Ashmore Park’s Community Hub

Plans for Ashmore Park’s new Community Hub are progressing at pace with local people having a direct input into the design of the building.

The new Community Hub, which will be based at the existing Ashmore Park Youth Centre on Griffiths Drive will see library, community centre & youth services brought together under one roof in order to reduce running costs and protect services. The image above is an Architect’s mock up of how the new Hub building could look once it’s completed.

Since Wolverhampton City Council’s Cabinet agreed plans to create a number of Community Hubs across the City in November 2012, a design group made up of residents, community, youth and library staff, as well as volunteers has met regularly with Council architects to draw up plans for the new Hub.

The design group has worked to identify the needs of service users and address any issues that have arisen, whilst ensuring community services and facilities remain on the estate.

The Plans

The plans, which have been drawn up by Wolverhampton City Council architects and adapted several times at the request of the design group will see a brand new extension built to house Library facilities, creating a link between the two existing Youth Centre buildings, whilst flexible, multi-purpose rooms will be available for the community to use.

Other plans include a new combined fitness gym, an IT suite and wifi throughout the building, as well as major refurbishment of the existing sports hall roof and changing rooms.

Have Your Say

With the plans yet to be finalised, the design group has organised a drop in session in order to give residents an opportunity to see the plans in further detail and have their say.

The drop in session will be held at Ashmore Park Youth Centre from 7pm – 8:30pm on Wednesday 13th February.

Local residents are encouraged to attend the drop in and speak to design group members about the plans – comments can also be left and these will be fed back into planning meetings.

If the plans are approved it is hoped that Ashmore Park’s new Community Hub will open in March 2014.

Work progressing at Ashmore Park Community Hub

Work is well under way to create the new Ashmore Park Community Hub.

And residents and community leaders were able to see progress for themselves when they took a tour of the site.

The hub is the first of number of developments across the city which will bring information and library services and youth and community facilities under one roof.

By doing so, Wolverhampton City Council hopes to protect these important services in the face of Government cuts.

At Ashmore Park, a 134m2 glass and steel extension is being built to house a library and link together the existing youth club and sports hall buildings – both of which are being refurbished to create flexible facilities that can be used by the whole community.

Both Ashmore Park Library and Ashmore Park Community Centre, which are on the same road, will relocate to the new facility, which will open for the first time in May 2014.

The new hub will also feature a new community gym including showers and changing facilities, six multi-purpose meeting rooms, a lounge and kitchen and IT facilities, as well as additional parking.

Contractors AM Griffiths have been on site for three weeks, and are busy stripping out some of the internal fittings before the main construction work gets underway.

Local residents and community organisations played an instrumental part in the Community Design Group which shaped the proposals.

Design Group member and WV11.co.uk co-founder James Clarke said: “The members of the community-led design group have worked really hard guiding the design process for the hub and we are looking forward to seeing this much needed facility opening on our estate in 2014.”

Councillor Elias Mattu, Wolverhampton City Council’s Cabinet Member for Leisure and Communities, said: “We’re pleased that we’re now starting to see the new Ashmore Park Community Hub taking shape. This is an exciting point in the development of the hub, which I am confident will become a popular and well-used facility for the people of Ashmore Park.”

He added: “This is one of the first in a network of hubs which we are developing across the city as we try to protect important services in the face of swingeing Government cuts.

“By bringing them together under one roof, we hope to make them both more cost-effective and also more easily accessible to customers.

“The new Ashmore Park hub will offer more space and flexibility for community activities than is available at the current community centre, and there will be opportunities for social events and private parties which can’t presently be accommodated there.”

Ashmore Park Library and Ashmore Park Community Centre will continue to operate as usual while construction work takes place, but to enable the improvements to be carried out to the youth club and sports hall some services are being altered during this time.

As a result, Tuesday and Thursday youth club sessions have been temporarily relocated to Ashmore Park Community Centre, while the regular sessions for young people from St Albans, Corpus Christi and Coppice schools are being provided at St Albans Church Hall every Monday and Friday. Youth workers are also offering a variety of outreach sessions around the local area.
